Jessica Bruised at the Touch of Our HandSpontaneous BruisingThrombocytopenia

by Bette Katz

On Sept. 11, 2001 late in the evening around 7:00 pm, Jessica (my dachshund) began bruising all over her body (spontaneous bruising). Every time we touched her it left hand prints literally. It happened suddenly. We called the only 24 hour emergency vet in the area 45 minutes away.

The doctor immediately suspected she had Thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is a disorder in which the number of platelets (a type of blood cell) is abnormally low, sometimes associated with abnormal bleeding. Causes are poisoning, allergies, or idiopathic (unknown). The blood tests confirmed that it was Thrombocytopenia.

Jessica had always had a reaction to her shots. She had also had a spot on flea treatment 7 days prior. We are unsure what caused this to happen. Sept. 13, 2001 at 9:00 am, she was on two i.v.?s looking very weak. Dr White pulled me out of the room. He said, ?There is nothing more we can do!? Dr. White suggested if we could get her to the Auburn Veterinary Hospital. She may have a slight chance but it was less than 50%. Dr. White put Auburn Veterinary Hospital on standby.

Upon arrival Auburn Veterinary Hospital excellent team of doctors: Dr. Bellhom and Dr. MacEntire and Dr. Wohl verified the diagnosis and immediately took action after 12 days at Auburn and 1 ? years treatment with our vet veterinary with Auburn?s veterinary team Jessica is back to her normal self. Please help us to spread the news of this condition.

Jessica is back to normal self living a very spoiled life with her family!
